PAR Famílias

PAR Families aims to provide refuge to families in Portugal through a unique and innovative integration model that we believe to be more inclusive, in that is addresses the usual gaps which arise in the integration of families from migrant backgrounds into their host communities.  PAR Families is a hosting project that promotes the integration of migrant families in Portugal. To facilitate the integration of the families but also to give them a sense of independence in Portuguese society, it is necessary to ensure that they are provided with training and support to help them to learn the Portuguese language.  This will also support their integration into the labour market.

PAR – The Refugee Support Platform is a Portuguese network of more than 360 civil society organisations whose aim is to support the hosting of refugees during the current humanitarian crisis.

PAR has set up three broad axis of intervention:

  1. PAR Public Opinion Awareness;
  2. PAR Linha da Frente [Frontline], and
  3. PAR Famílias [Families].

Methodology used in the Best Practice

PAR Families works with the support of the community (associations, parishes, religious organisations, welfare centres schools, town halls…). This model implies that for each family of refugees arriving to Portugal under the EU relocation agreement there will be an institution directly responsible for them. Each hosting institution has to be able to ensure, with its own resources, assisted by local partners and with financial help from the European Union, for a maximum period of two years, that they can provide the following:

  1. independent accommodation;
  2. food and clothing;
  3. support regarding access to healthcare services;
  4. support regarding access to education;
  5. Portuguese language classes;
  6. support regarding access to the labour market (including support to migrant entrepreneurs, when applicable).
